Lesson on enthusiasm by Dr. Kanteerava Balasaraswathi

Today, he made me remember a quote of Lord Budha, “ Your work is to discover your world and then with all your heart give yourself to it”. He is none other than Dr. Kanteerava Balasaraswathi, the present Dean of SS Institute of Medical Sciences, Davanagere. He was fondly addressed Dr. Kanti by his pals and we also used that abbreviated form of his name when he is not around. When I first met him in 2000 he was at the age of 62, but with all enthusiasm and fire in his activities. I can never forget Dr. Kanti, first because he was instrumental in bringing me to Chitradurga from Kerala and, second, he amazed us by his confidence and execution while administering anaesthesia to some of the most complicated cases. He is one of the best intensivist I have seen. He was a successful person because of his work, true to the words of Donald Kendall who said, “The only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary.” I had many instances where we worked as a team in some of the difficult cases and I had deeply observed that he was always happy working hard even at that age. Elbert Hubbard once quoted, “Get happiness out of your work or you may never know what happiness is” and Dr. Kanti is a living example for the same. He started his dream project in Chitradurga, the Basaveshwara Hospital and Research Center ® which later became part of the Basaveshwara Medical college and Hospital. However, he could not cherish the dream due to multiple reasons beyond his control and he had to sell it to the Bruhanmutt. He must have gone through a great deal of embarrassment, humility and disappointment. When asked about his secret of success Ted turner said, “If I only had a little humility, I would be perfect. And Dr. Kanti had all the humility to be perfect. He never gave up. As famed American singer Bruce Spingsteen aptly puts it, “Some guys they just give up living, others start dying little by little piece by piece, some guys come home from work and wash up, and go racing in the streets”, he took up the difficult task of making SS Institute of Medical Sciences compliant for recognition by Medical Council of India and he is successful at that. That is the result of his dedication. Cecil B. De Mille once said, “ Most of us serve our ideals by fits and starts. The person who makes a success of living is the one who sees his goal steadily and aims for it unswervingly. That is dedication.” Today, I am in Davanagere to attend fellowship and dinner meeting being organized by Association of Surgeons of India. I am on invitation by Dr. Sabba Rao, Cardiothoracic surgeon of City Central Hospital . It was a surprise meeting for me with Dr. Kanti who was also an invitee. Answering my query, he explained to me in detail about the developments and changes he has made at SS Institute of Medical Sciences. His enthusiasm was contagious and motivational for me and reaffirms my faith in the words of Benamin Disraeli, former prime minister of Britain , who said, “Every production of genius must be the production of enthusiasm.” I left the party with great sense of enthusiasm after meeting my other old pals Dr. Manjunath Gowda, Dr. Basanth Kumar and Dr. Prakash S.S.
