24 Feb 2008 By the woods of Jogimatti forest
Fig. 1: The Company! A bunch of friends, some old and some new got together this morning for trekking in the woods. Woods ! That's what it was when I was a small boy. Once upon a time my hometown Chitradurga was surrounded by a thick tropical forest. The growing population and the fast deforestation have reduced the Chitradurga to a desert with average annual rains of only 475 mm. The Jogimatti reserve forest was one of the thick forest patch remained during my high school days i.e., about 25 years back. There were many sandal wood trees. The forest was full of wild animals. I myself had spotted cheetah, black bears, deers, antelopes and small lovely rabbits and innumerable variety of birds. Now what remained there were small bushes, few peacocks and orphaned urban cows and buffalos. Well I still loved that stretch of land. There was still fresh air and good trekking paths. The company was good. It was a mixture of business people, industrialists and a physical instructor with his 7 year old son. It was very refreshing to be in the nature, breath the fresh air and get away from noisy life of the city. We chose a path less travelled to make our trekking a bit challenging and give ourselves some workout. The path was full of thorny bushes, irregular boulders, slippery sand, trapping crevices and not so scary insects. We took nearly 3 hours to complete our trekking. In the end, we were dead tired and drenched with sweat. In the end, we decided to treat ourselves to Masala Dosa at the famous joint "The LTR". We really enjoyed every bit of our trekking. It was great to be amidst nature and breathe the fresh air. It was a sort of rejuvenation for me. I felt strong again. I decided to do it more often, if possible almost every Sunday. Learning Six Sigma at Lakshmi Tiffin Room The world is changing fast and so is India and her towns and cities. But every city will have some culture, heritage, buildings, monuments and people as reminiscent of glorious past. Such one thing I myself and almost everyone in Chitradurga town always relish is Lakshmi Tiffin Room or in short LTR, an Icon of food habits of Chitradurgans. LTR is in old Chitradurga, on the way to Chitradurga fort, near the first entrance of outer most layer of Chitradurga fort, famous as Elephant Door or "Ane Bagilu". The growing population, road widening, encroachment of Chitradurga fort, cable TV, pop culture, western mania have not succeeded in lowering the love of Chitradurgans for the food of LTR. Fore more than 75 years, it attracted people of all walks of life, irrespective of their cast and creed. For many Chitradurgans it is a home for their daily breakfast. The busy atmosphere has not discouraged anyone to use it as a get away dining point. It was a proud place for us to take all the strangers who visited us to relish some those dishes there. It is also hot spot for all the tourists and travellers who pass through the Chitradurga. Today it was obvious choice for us to treat ourselves with LTR breakfast. While I had my fovorite "Khali Dosa (Rice pancake cooked without oil) with Coconut Chutni" it made me think about the success of LTR. Time has changed everything except the taste of the food items at LTR. This speaks volumes for the commitment of the management of LTR to control quality and the taste of their food for more than 75 years. The taste of Dosa is same as it was before 35 years back when I eaten hundreds of dosas as a kid. That time my house was very close to LTR and I remember when we fall sick, all food including coffee had to be from LTR to satisfy our taste buds. LTR should be a perfect example for service and manufacturing industry. After the breakfast, I took a tour of the hotel, recognized few old faces, and saw how the principles of TQM (Total Quality Management) or Six Sigma working there. The kitchen was simplicity in work. The lesson learned shall remain in my mind like the taste of the wonderful dosa remained on my taste buds.
